Background: Functional analyses are considered the gold standard for identifying the function of challenging behaviors and determining subsequent interventions. Although recommended, their use by behavior analysts is reported as infrequent. Objective: To conduct a systematic review of peer-reviewed articles that describe functional analyses of challenging behaviors as a pre-treatment procedure, conducted in Brazil, regardless of the publication venue. Methods: Online searches were performed in PsycINFO, ERIC, ISI Web of Science, Virtual Health Library, and Google Scholar; additionally, behavior analysis research groups were contacted by phone. Included studies (i) were conducted in Brazil; (ii) used functional analysis as pre-treatment; (iii) employed experimental procedures and measured challenging behaviors; and (iv) demonstrated a relationship between environmental events and behavior. Results: A total of 234 studies were identified; however, only five met the inclusion criteria. The majority (80%) were classified as using brief functional analysis, although the authors classified them as standard functional analysis. No study presented or achieved differentiation criteria in the functional analyses. Conclusions: It is concluded that studies involving functional analyses to inform treatment plans are scarce in Brazil, necessitating adjustments in research to achieve the required accuracy.
