Abstract

Background and Objective: Dating violence is a social phenomenon characterized by physical, psychological, sexual, or online aggression between intimate partners, aimed at controlling and dominating the other person. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on dating violence among Brazilian adolescents and young adults. Method: his systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 recommendations and was conducted in the SciELO, LILACS, PePSIC, and CAPES Journals Portal databases. Eligible studies were empirical investigations conducted in Brazil with adolescent and/or young adult samples, published between 2013 and 2023. The search strategies identified 647 records, of which 27 met all eligibility criteria and were included in the narrative synthesis. Results: The findings showed that dating violence has been examined along three main axes: (a) family, sociocultural, and individual factors associated with perpetration and victimization; (b) prevalence and patterns of different types of violence, including both offline and technology-mediated forms; and (c) coping and help-seeking strategies, with a predominance of informal support from peers and close networks. Conclusions: Overall, the results support the view of dating violence as a public health and human rights issue and are expected to inform the development of culturally sensitive intervention programs that promote the identification, prevention, and management of dating violence among adolescents and young adults, with a view to reducing violent behaviors and promoting healthier relationships.
