Introduction: Higher education students face an adaptation process, especially when displaced, which can lead to emotional difficulties.
Objective: This study aimed to describe the housing conditions of these students; compare anxiety, depression and stress levels based on sociodemographic variables and the general population scores; examine associations between sociodemographic variables and the psychopathological symptoms reported; explore differences in these symptoms according to the difficulty in finding accommodation.
Method: Cross-sectional study. 163 students completed online a sociodemographic and housing conditions questionnaire, and the Anxiety, Depression and Stress Scales. Women showed higher levels of anxiety and stress, but not depression. The displaced students scored higher on negative emotional symptoms when compared to the Portuguese population.
Results: There were no differences in these symptoms when considering difficulty in finding accommodation or the price.
Conclusion: The results suggest the importance of developing psychological support measures for the displaced students.
